{"id":157,"date":"2007-04-11T09:10:00","date_gmt":"2007-04-11T17:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stwallskull.com\/blog\/?p=157"},"modified":"2008-02-06T07:55:06","modified_gmt":"2008-02-06T15:55:06","slug":"happy-hooligan-strips-by-frederick-opper-circa-1903-and-1904","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stwallskull.com\/blog\/2007\/04\/11\/happy-hooligan-strips-by-frederick-opper-circa-1903-and-1904\/","title":{"rendered":"Crumbling Paper: Happy Hooligan Strips by Frederick Opper circa 1903 and 1904 (strips #1 and #2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a Happy Hooligan strip by Frederick Opper from 1904&#8230; click the image to see the strip.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stwallskull.com\/blog\/images\/crumbling_paper\/crumblingpaper_happyhooligan01.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/stwallskull.com\/blog\/images\/crumbling_paper\/thumb_crumblingpaper_happyhooligan01.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pictured in the panel above we see (besides the gemsbock), from left to right, Happy Hooligan and his brothers Montmorency and Gloomy Gus.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of being easily one of the most popular comic strips of its era, Happy Hooligan, as far as I know, has only been the subject of ONE modern reprint book. <\/p>\n<p>As usual, esteemed comics historian Bill Blackbeard was the culprit&#8230; he had a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Happy-Hooligan-complete-compilation-1904-1905\/dp\/0883556588\">Happy Hooligan<\/a> volume in his wonderful Hyperion Library of Classic American Comic Strips book series from 1977.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t believe Opper&#8217;s other strips (which were also quite popular&#8230; Alphonse and Gaston, and And Her Name Was Maud) have had modern reprint books at all. There were only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/search-handle-url\/104-8227686-5403142?%5Fencoding=UTF8&#038;search-type=ss&#038;index=books&#038;field-author=Frederick%20Burr%20Opper\">books that came out while the strips were still running<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>This is a pretty awful oversight, as besides his massive popularity in the early part of the last centrury, Opper is a very funny cartoonist and excellent artist. You can also see samples of Opper&#8217;s work in some comics history overviews, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/SMITHSONIAN-COLLECTION-NEWSPAPER-COMICS\/dp\/B000GLCLQO\/ref=sr_1_3\/104-8227686-5403142?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1176310194&#038;sr=1-3\"><em>The Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/search.barnesandnoble.com\/BookSearch\/isbnInquiry.asp?z=y&#038;EAN=9780760761052&#038;itm=22\"><em>100 Years of Comic Strips<\/em><\/a> (both wonderful books also edited by Blackbeard).<\/p>\n<p>How funny is Opper? Happy Hooligan wears a tin can on his head for a hat. A tin can!
