TODAY’S FEATURED ITEM:

There is an interesting thread going on The Comics Journal Message Board right now discussing the sad realities of Sea Monkey ownership.

The thread directs us to this article, about how the Jewish inventor of Sea Monkeys (and X-Ray Specs), Harold Von Braunhut, used to fund white supremacist causes with the pennies he had earned from gullible children. I don’t whether Sea Monkey sales still support these causes or not, but I don’t think I will not be buying any more mortality-challenged brine shrimp in the future to be on the safe side.

TODAY’S FEATURED LINK:

On a thread on comic strip reprints that people wish would happen on The Comics Journal Message Board it was noted that in their Terry and the Pirates V.6 reprint, IDW mentioned they will be doing a reprint of Jack Kent’s wonderful strip King Aroo as part of their increasingly impressive Library of American Comic Strips (along with Alex Raymond’s Rip Kirby and Neal Adams’ Ben Casey). This is the first time I have heard this mentioned anywhere. Here are some examples of King Aroo from Cool-Mo-Dee and Cartoon Snap, if you aren’t familiar with it.

My good friends Kevin Cannon and Zander Cannon have an interview up about their upcoming graphic novel about the space race, T-Minus (written by Jim Ottaviani, who was interviewed earlier) at Newsarama. The interview includes preview images of some of their typically gorgeous pages. Note that this project features space monkeys, so you know you won’t want to miss it.

TODAY’S FEATURED ITEMS:

WIRED recently posted interviews with Watchmen creators Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, in anticipation of the upcoming, unfortunate movie adaptation. The interview with Moore, who wants nothing to do with the movie (and discusses at length the reasons why) is typically fascinating reading. Of particular note is the last page of the interview, where Moore talks quite a bit about his upcoming magical grimoire he is currently working on, The Bumper Book of Magic. It sounds like it should be incredible.

TODAY’S FEATURED ITEM:

I’m very excited about an upcoming gallery show at MCAD in Minneapolis featuring the work of the artists in Fantagraphics’ MOME anthology (including locals Tom Kaczynski and Zak Sally). MOME is the best ongoing comics anthology around these days in my view, and the talent in it includes many of the best cartoonists working today. Needless to say, if you’re in the area, you won’t want to miss this… the opening reception is March 6th. More info here.

Also on March 6 is an afternoon lecture at 1PM with Mome editor Eric Reynolds. Find out more about this related event here. April 9th there will be a gallery talk with Tom Kaczynski and Zak Sally starting at 6:30 p.m.

Also of note! on March 1st, there will be a screening at MCAD of the new movie Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist. More info here.

TODAY’S FEATURED ITEM:

The amusing Kindertrauma blog posted what is probably the complete 70’s commercials for Freakies cereal (they were resurrected briefly in the late 80’s or early 90’s). I always found the design of these characters to be immensely appealing… I still have some of the magnets on my refrigerator. Most the animation is surprisingly slick, especially when compared to the complete horseshit that made up television cartoon animation in the seventies.

Happy Friday the 13th!

TODAY’S FEATURED LINK:

I’m excited to call your attention to The National Digital Newspaper Program, the first online newspaper site I’ve seen where the comics appear to be in reasonably good resolution (you could actually print these and have it look decent)… and it’s free! Thank you, gubbmint, for doing something worthwhile for once! Unfortunately, no color, but still fantastic. Check out the great comics sections from The Salt Lake Herald, for a good example. Those of you out there participating in the previously mentioned BIG FUNNY project will want to check this out for sure!

Also, here’s an index of online newspaper digitization projects.
